Here we go again…

It’s been one week since the last “weather event.” And here we go again: another strong cold front approaching that “may” produce gale force gusts and strong to severe isolated thunderstorms. “Main threat will be damaging wind gusts and tornadoes.” Lovely. And so we are checking all the connections to our bimini and solar panels, preparing for high winds. Our dinghy is secured, once again, on our aft deck. The good news is that we’ve had several beautiful Florida-like days with sun and warm temperatures. I shouldn’t have put my wool hat and scarf away…

We had planned to remove these lines criss-crossing our bimini after gale force winds earlier in January, but we’ve needed them several times since. And so they have stayed in place. Beats having to put them back up every few days, and it seems to help reduce the wind catching from underneath.

  1. We are tentatively planning to go to SafeCove Tuesday and haul out March 2nd, then Deland on the 6th for my father’s 104 th birthday on the 7th. If the boat is done, head north from Deland on the 8th. Enough rain and wind with other projects waiting at home.

Glen and I are helping the City of Escanaba plan to build a $1+ million community solar project, maybe this summer! And Adena is getting new fore stay and backstay that aren’t done yet for launch.

We are installing a 30 watt battery charger solar panel to keep the batteries up despite the poor shore power at SafeCove. And changed the seawater impeller today. The projects never end.

Hope the front tomorrow is not destructive… Marilyn

  2. I am so sorry to hear you are in for another round. It is supposed to drop here about 20 degrees in one day as the cold front hits us here in Vero and winds, though certainly not gale, are supposed to be 17 – 25 k. We will be thinking of you both!

    • Hi Elaine, the tabular forecast isn’t showing anything over 28 mph, but the marine forecast is saying gale force gusts and “damaging winds” with thunderstorms. After what we’ve experienced, forecasters being wrong so much of the time, we’re trying to be prepared. We should probably have the means to watch local television, to stay updated with the changes as they see them. But we don’t, so we’ll make do with our radar app and NOAA.

  3. We know what you mean. We have reservations for Hawks Nest Marina here on Cat Island for the next two days to ride out the weather event. Then, we are hoping, we have a few days to explore the island.
